Doctor Who 30.08,09 Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead (2008)

The Doctor takes Donna to the biggest library in the universe, an entire library planet, but the place isn’t just quiet, it’s deserted.

6/10

Following on nicely from the Doctor’s 5000AD copy of Agatha Christie’s Death in the Clouds at the end of the previous episode, this episode has an unusually strong premise that could genuinely cause real world unease and nightmares: shadows that eat you. This is strong enough to carry us through an uneven story where the characters conspicuously keep standing in the shadows despite repeated warnings not to and extended sequences where neither we nor the characters really know what’s going on. The second plotline regarding a woman who clearly knows the Doctor very well but whom he hasn’t met yet is also very interesting and highly worthwhile and probably points to a future series. Special mention for the moppet Eve Newton.
