Killzone (2004)

Years after he First Helghan War with Earth, Helghan forces bypass Vekta’s thought-impregnable defence mechanisms and start the Second Helghan War under the charismatic leadership of Scolar Visari. Though, it has to be said, calling a conflict The First Helghan War is probably tempting fate and a return engagement was somewhat predictable.

7/10

Accomplished military first-person shooter which makes good use of the PlayStation 2’s tendency to make graphics look muddy and unimpressive. The level design is consistently good giving the player enough tactical decisions and choices while the enemy and ally AI is generally more than good enough. Mildly inaccurate weapons and bullet-sponge enemies make the combat feel less crisp than other genre entries but whatever shooters need to be fun, playable and engaging, Killzone has it. It’s never more than a good first-person shooter but that is certainly enough. Laying out the manual like a newspaper was also a really nice touch.

This game contains sexual swear words and extended gun violence in gameplay, some graphic and extreme gun violence and strong melee violence in cut scenes.

Chaos Legion (2003)

Knight of the Dark Glyphs Sieg Wahrheit isn’t content with having an awesome name and sets about putting some manners on the formerly virtuous Victor Delacroix who has fallen to the dark side and now controls the hordes of the underworld. Delacroix’s motives are tied to the past and a girl named Siela.

7/10

The adventures of the awesomely-named Sieg Wahrheit (no-one makes up names like Japanese game developers) initially appears to be a simple button masher but thanks to combos, great enemies, bosses and the titular Legions, quickly reveals an enjoyable depth and strategy. It’s still a button-masher but an interesting one. Inter-level music (where you manage your Legions levelling) is way too short considering the amount of time you spend in there (fortunately it’s not quite annoying), the story is typically impenetrable, and it’s rather hard but the music, presentation and graphics are outstanding.

This game contains extended fantasy blade and projectile violence, unpleasant and gory scenes.

Gran Turismo Gran Turismo: The Real Driving Simulator 3: A-spec (2001)

1 or 2 players offline.

Starting with a small number of credits, purchase cars and upgrades till you’ve won every race and championship available.

9/10

While Gran Turismo 2: A-Spec may have been a more accurate, if mean, title, this game offers reference-quality graphics (not matched by any other PlayStation 2 game for about five years), an astonishing number of challenges and mildly improved (though still dull) A.I. but it takes significantly longer to get its addictive hooks into you. For me, the main reason for this is that there is no longer a racing modification available for ordinary cars and so you have little motivation to keep upgrading your car because it will just look the same even if it goes like stink.

new Terminator: Dawn of Date
Game doesn’t run in widescreen and has the image squished into a 4:3 area in the middle of the display. Opening movie has occasional sound glitches. Frame-rate occasionally stutters. Heat-haze effects are incorrectly rendered on top of everything else including the HUD. I also wonder what the ugliest lead character in video-game history is; I vote for Kyle Reese.
