Every so often, Digital Foundry (for Eurogamer) run a series of technical comparison reviews for games released on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This is a compilation of their findings into a list (and it includes some results from Lens of Truth and some from IGN Insider).
Now it should be noted that Eurogamer doesn’t always definitively say which version is better and even sometimes proclaims a draw despite pointing out shortcomings on the PlayStation 3 one of the consoles and vice versa. Therefore, bear in mind that this is my understanding of the articles made on the Digital Foundry blog and that you can always read the article yourself by clicking on the icon.
Xbox 360 versus PS3 Summary
A damning victory for the Xbox 360. That said, after the first wave of games, the differences tend to be minute and have absolutely no effect on gameplay and the best-looking PS3 exclusives (we’ll ignore Haze), in my opinion, look better than the best-looking 360 exclusives.

PS3 is great and Xbox too but i like games on PC more than any thing i think 7 th generation is going to end soon.
great put up, very informative. I’m wondering why the other specialists of this sector don’t notice this.
You must continue your writing. I am confident, you have a
great readers’ base already!
Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme off thiss
site. It’s simple, yet effective. A llot of tmes it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usabnility aand appearance.
I must say you’ve ddone a awesome job with this. Additionally, thhe
bllog loads extremely quihk foor mee on Firefox.
Exceptional Blog!
I’ve frequently checked this site for a while; you do a good job of compiling info for what this site is dedicated to– comparing multiplats on the PS3 vs. 360. But the comments from users are kind of funny. People from 2010 or 2011 claiming that the console war was “over” and it’s a “clear victory for the 360.” This list is half the story. Not only are the mutliplats better on PS3, but there are loads of them. And unlike the 360, Sony has continued to make new IPs and will continue making exclusives until 2014 and possibly beyond. Think of 2013. Sony has Ni No Kuni, Tales of Xilia, The Last of Us, Dragon’s Crown, Disgaea D2, Sly Cooper 4, God of War: Ascension, Gran Turismo 6 and Microsoft has… what? Gears of War: Judgement? A game that was a major step back from its predecessors in every conceivable way.
So, if the only thing– and I mean the ONLY thing– you care about is having a marginally better port of a multiplat game, get a 360. If you care at all about exclusive games, get a PS3 and you’ll *still* be able to play every game on this list. I own both systems and have for a very long time. If you only have a 360, I can see you taking comfort in this list. But you’re missing out on almost all of the best exclusive titles of the generation. It’s absolutely no contest; PS3 wins overall, even if the 360 wins the “superior mutliplat quality” war.
Hey Slimm. I came across this site on a GameSpot board and figured you might be interested in more Head-to-Head comparisons. I dug around and found a nearly dead archive with every IGN Head-To-Head up until March 2010.
The relevant part you want begins with Madden NFL ’07:
http://insider.ign.com/index/features.html?constraint.topic_id.article=840&constraint.return_all=is_true
The only problem is those aren’t direct links. But if you’re interested, all you need is the name of the game and a quick Google search. (ie: madden 07 head to head ign)
Thanks for taking the time putting this all together. Keep up the good work.
Link is dead. Here’s the list in Wayback Machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/20110916041901/http://insider.ign.com/index/features.html?constraint.topic_id.article=840&constraint.return_all=is_true
If I find the time, I’ll link articles of older titles on the message board with brief summaries of each verdict. Something to have reference.
Thanks.
hi can you update your site? Digital foundry has metro head to head on
Completely missed that one, thanks. A PS3 win, aswell. Double-thanks!!
I wonder about your verdict of Bioshock Infinite: in DF, it says PS3 has a nods flowing gameplay experience due to its more stable frame rate, but altenatively, the XBOX can offer the experience with less screen-tearing. So neither console is perfect in terms of performance. Should it be called a tie overall cuz both console can well-deliver the game on their own?
A valid point so I’ll adjust the hover text. However, the verdict gives the PS3 the nod and the nod = win.
Thanks a lot for making this list Mister Slimm. It’s a handy time saver for when I’m trying to decide which platform to get a game on, (although I do still check out the various articles and videos). Also I recently learned of gamedifferences.com which might also be useful for those trying to decide which version of a game to get. Man, I miss the good old days of Sega vs Nintendo – so much simpler then! XD
Good blog. Keep it up, man.
That’s incredible. Although I though that the configurations of XBOX 360 is lower than the PS3 ones, but it can still have a hard beat on the video games front. Yeah we acknowledge that writing game on XBOX is far easier than on PS3, so it can be fully developed first. In the future, we will see some brand new console and see another war, maybe between PS4 and XBOX 720 and Wii U or something like that :), but for this war, a clear victory for XBOX 360
About the exclusive games, that depends on people’s taste. Maybe they like Gran Turismo 5, but the other feel Forza 4 will be superior. God of War is a great series, but it means nothing to shooter-fanatics, and Gears of Wars series is no good for Action-adventure creeds. So compare them is a little awkward, IMO.
BTW, i don’t see the information about Bioshock?! It is an awesome game and shouldn’t be missed by any mean, don’t you feel that? :)
Ok I spotted that, sorry for the previous comment
look people its as simple as this…. Xbox 360 is no were near the ps3 when it comes on to the hardware compartment, and with a good hardware you will be able to produce better graphics, the reason that Microsoft is leading… with i quote (multiplatform games) is simply because developers are lazy… because they got comfortable with the Xbox 360.. outdated hardware.. which is pushed to its limit hahaha, as we go into the future… the ps3 will be crowded king, this said, Microsoft might have won the battle… but they sure as hell arnt gona win da war ;)
eu tenho os dois consoles , mas o fato é o seguinte pelo fato do xbox ter o hardware relativamente inferior , os sonystas inventam varias desculpas ridiculas pela surra que sempre levou . fato xbox 360 é melhor e ponto , fato.
We’re already in year 7 of this console life cycle, how far into the future are you planning ?
Just to be clear, I do enjoy this list and check it, just saying even the big sites that do these comparisons I sometimes disagree with, especially lately. by the time they release their results I have already read enough impressions already on GAF with multiple people often playing the games early.
Does all this really matter anyway things are many times preferences anyway, especially now. I much prefer the look of Batman AC and Deus EX HR on 360. But then Just Cause 2 I do like it more on PS3 because the motion blur is overdone on 360 version imo and I like the cleaner look of PS3 ver. Dragon’s Dogma is a good example if screen tearing bothers you you are clearly better off with ps3 copy but some frame dips bothers you would go easily pick up 360 there. These comparisons are clearly starting get to more personal preferences unlike the the early days. Yeah I still check out the comparisons only to double dip on the game later to find out I disagree with what winner was picked.
It’s not like the good old days of Spectrum vs C64, Atari ST vs Amiga, Sega vs Nintendo.
You should really change the Just Cause 2 score to a tie. In the Eurogamer article he directly says “Objectively: it’s a tie.” He says it is crisper, cleaner graphics, higher frame rate on xbox 360 – no screen tear and video capture on ps3. That isn’t a PS3 win.
I have both systems, so I am just saying because I was about to buy it on Ps3 until I read the full article.
Agreed. Must have been a PS3 fan-boy mood that day and leapt on his statement about playing on PS3 more.
Haha, yeah, understandable after reading it.
@intergalactic gamer:
“If this is a PS3 vs. Xbox 360 comparison blog the winner should be taken from Lens of Truth. Digital Foundry may speak techno babble better but he misses all kinds of details that LOT pick up on.”
LMAO. You’re kidding, right? Digital Foundry has a LOT more experience than Lens of Truth does, & they’ve done multiplat comparisons the longest.
Not kidding at all actually. Look at Soul Cal 5, DF said they were identical, look at LOTs screens, they’re not identical, they’re close. Arkham City was a clear win on the 360 and DF tied it, as was Battlefield 3. Just saying, I will always read them both and make my own decision but I prefer LOT.
BTW Mass Effect 3 is much better on the Xbox 360.
http://www.lensoftruth.com/head2head-mass-effect-3-analysis/
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-mass-effect-3-ps3-fps-issues
Eurogamer is much better than LOT, it really isn’t even close.
Nice blog man, keep up with the great work! :)
Spider-man 3 is DEFINITELY a win for the Playstation 3, NOT the Xbox 360. There is a massive difference when actually playing the game on two separate consoles. The 360 version is severely broken by horrible cameras and controls. They corrected much of that in the PS3 version.
This is a good example of the entire game review industry only reviewing a game on one platform and not every platform.
Yes, I know the game is ancient. No, I’m not a fanboy for the PS3. I try to buy games based on the optimum console for any given game. Bayonetta and Alice: Madness Returns are definite 360 wins. LA Noire and Saints Row: The Third are better on the PS3.
I bring up Spider-man 3 only because I haven’t seen the truth about that game represented very much, if at all. That truth being that the PS3 version is the superior version. And I personally think it’s the best Spider-man game to date. Well, there’s Spider-man 2, but I’m referring to this generation. It’s better than Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimension, and that last one which was just awful [Edge of Time].
Digital Foundry doesn’t agree with you but one good thing was, while checking the write-up, I discovered that the link took you to the wrong page so I’ve fixed that. Thanks!
I just want to say thank you for your effort to keep this page updated all the time. Thank you.
“and the best-looking PS3 exclusives (we’ll ignore Haze) inarguably look better than the best-looking 360 exclusives.”
Your opinion is inarguable? Really? You do realize that there are plenty of gamers who disagree, myself included. To each their own, but from this statement I’ll take your interpretation of DF articles with a grain of salt.
Agreed. “Inarguably” reduced to “in my opinion.”
I’m pleasantly surprised! It’s good to see gamers and not fanboys online!
Now I’ve got to ask, which 360 exclusives look better than their PS3 counterparts? I’m just playing through Gears of War 2 which looks fab, but I think Uncharted 2 looks better. I’ve completed Forza Motorsport 3 but Gran Turismo 5, at it’s best, looks better thanks to the premium car models (but sounds much worse). Halo 3 looks nice but has a shocking draw distance, Halo 3: ODST is a mess, Halo: Reach is much, much better but Killzone 2 and 3 still just best it. Of course, this kind of discussion is fun but these games (Halo 3: ODST excepted; I really did not like that game) are all tremendous examples of their genre and terrific fun to play. If you’re lucky enough to have both systems, they are all very much worth experiencing.
I think Gears of War 2 and Uncharted 2 look about the same. Based on my time with the Gears 3 beta and the Uncharted 3 beta I reckon Gears 3 looks better, but I ‘ll reserve judgment until both games are released.
I do think Forza 3 looks better than GT5 because the screen tearing that plagues GT5 (at launch – not sure if that has been fixed) is really off putting. Forza 4 from what I have seen completely blows away GT5 or for that matter any PS3 exclusive thus far. Once again I’ll wait till the game is released before I make a definitive call, but so far it really looks amazing.
Killzone 2 and 3 (especially) definitely look better than the Halo titles. I however don’t like either series with the exception of Reach (which also happens to be the only Halo title I have bothered to complete in single player). Not really a big FPS gamer :).
My favourite PS3 exclusives have been Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain and Yakuza 3, and I have had fun with the 2 Uncharted titles. What are your favourite 360 exclusives?
Favourite 360 exclusives? Of the games mentioned before as being the graphical giants of the system, I thoroughly enjoyed Halo: Reach and Gears of War 2.
I like Forza Motorsport 2 much more than 3 despite the latter game really upping the graphical fidelity. I also thought very highly of Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4; shame Microsoft killed that but it looks like they may be folding some of the more arcadey gameplay (not handling, of course) into Forza 4.
Crackdown’s a great game, a lot of fun and I even went to all the grief of collecting the Agility Orbs. Shame there was swearing in it, I don’t like that and it didn’t fit.
Fable II was a game I devoured and thoroughly enjoyed but the frame rate is shocking.
Other games I really connected to are Bullet Witch, the Crash Time series (though that’s on PC aswell), Earth Defense Force 2017 (huzzah!), and Import Tuner Challenge (the Tokyo Highway Challenge or Shutokou Battle series).
Exclusives that I own but haven’t played yet and am looking forward to are Alan Wake and Lost Odyssey.
Just wanna say I really appreciate your list. I used to be a PS3-only gamer but got the 360 for the SHMUPs and now I’ve gotten increasingly uncertain about which platform to get multi-console games for.
Please keep it up! I appreciate the recent updates (such as Shadows of the Damned)
Excuse me I respect the work that you’ve done here but I must say that the Crysis 2 face-off was NOT A TIE. I really don’t understand how you could interpret what was written any other way except a 360 win based on what was written in the digital foundry article. As a matter of fact lets be clear: There is no interpretation to be had here. It’s clear from the digital foundry article that the 360 version is the best choice between the two consoles.
Please change it because by leaving it you really are not doing yourself any favors in terms of your credibility.
READ IT AGAIN AND CORRECT IT.
Here are the key quotes from that article:
“There’s little doubt that the Xbox 360 is the cleaner, crisper experience and for the most part it commands a small but significant frame-rate advantage and fewer little glitches”
“On balance, 360 has the edge in terms of visuals and general performance, but PS3 more than holds its own, bettering the Microsoft platform in some areas.” (Seriously what is difficult to understand or be confused about here? On balance– meaning as a whole compared to some areas — The whole picture >>>>> some. Again what is hard to understand??! :/
If you read the article again those areas that DF is talking about are those isolated specific areas in the game that are brutally unoptimized that seriously affect the frame rate. It is in these areas that they say the ps3 holds up a bit better, but make no mistake as was pointed out by DF, they affect BOTH platforms and these areas are not central to gameplay.
Here are the key quotes…
“There are parts of the game that seem to be brutally unoptimised, bringing the performance level crashing down to the point where the afflicted sections become almost unplayable. In these situations, it seems that it is the Xbox 360 version that has the most difficulties, though there’s no mistaking that both platforms seem to lag badly in much the same areas.”
“Put simply, on certain stages, frame-rate varies rather drastically to the point where the game can feel almost unplayable.THANKFULLY THESE AREAS DON’T ACCOUNT FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE GAMEPLAY BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION”
So do you see now why you are wrong in saying it’s a tie based on the digital foundry article now?
You are basically justifying a tie based on the fact that the ps3 holds up better than the 360 in areas that affect both consoles badly. That’s like saying the ps3 won a one-legged race in these areas. While that is a nice feat the fact is at the end of the day both performers are disabled in these areas.
Not only that but you are trying to justify a tie based on these areas the ps3 holds up better that do not represent a majority of the gameplay. It’s as simple as that.
Again from DF:
“THANKFULLY THESE AREAS DON’T ACCOUNT FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE GAMEPLAY BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION”
Again from DF:
“There’s little doubt that the Xbox 360 is THE CLEANER, CRISPER EXPERIENCE (lol where is the tie in these words?) and for the most part it commands a small but significant frame-rate advantage and fewer little glitches” (again it’s clear what DF is saying here)
“On balance, 360 has the edge in terms of visuals and general performance, but PS3 more than holds its own, bettering the Microsoft platform in some areas.”
These quotes come from the summary/conclusive paragraphs on the last page. They are basically telling you that it’s a 360 win yet you seem to have some how turned your head the other way.
PLEASE CHANGE IT TO A 360 WIN. IT’S VERY MISLEADING.
If you do not change it then I’m sorry but then you come off as a closet ps3 fanboy who is upset like many other ps3 fanboys on the internet that the best looking game on consoles looks and plays better on the 360. Please change it.
Digital Foundry say “It’s difficult to give any really strong recommendation about which version of Crysis 2 to buy if you’re in the enviable position of being able to choose between both HD console platforms.”
The way I understood “On balance, 360 has the edge in terms of visuals and general performance, but PS3 more than holds its own, bettering the Microsoft platform in some areas.” was he was saying that 360 has the edge, but so does the PS3; the 360 is better but the PS3 is better.
“The increased performance and resolution indicates that the Xbox 360 is the preferred platform for Crysis 2, but in the heat of actual gameplay, this difference appears to evaporate.” ‘The difference evaporates.’
There’s clearly not much in it. That’s why I always link to the full article. You’ve taken it as a 360 win; I took it as 360 a hair better with bigger problems and the PS3 as a hair worse with smaller problems.
Please keep reading and commenting where you feel I’ve made an error.
Though the list is always taken from Digital Foundry, Lens of Truth also called it a tie.
In any case, it was a PC win.
“The way I understood “On balance, 360 has the edge in terms of visuals and general performance, but PS3 more than holds its own, bettering the Microsoft platform in some areas.” was he was saying that 360 has the edge, but so does the PS3; the 360 is better but the PS3 is better.”
Wow.
Yes the ps3 is better in SOME areas but the 360 is better OVERALL (i.e on balance). I’m just astonished that you are misreading words that couldn’t be any clearer.
” I took it as 360 a hair better with bigger problems and the PS3 as a hair worse with smaller problems.”
C’mon man that makes no sense and it’s false on top of that. Why are you ignoring this statement:
There’s little doubt that the Xbox 360 is THE CLEANER, CRISPER EXPERIENCE and for the most part it commands a small but significant frame-rate advantage and fewer little glitches”
….and this was stated after he said it was hard to give a recommendation. To me if I read that then it reads as a 360 win however slight. There are many times in these face offs where they have said they are so close blah blah blah but then stae howere this version has an edge here and here. You’ve even given the win for those games so why not now? Be consistent.
the eurogamer of la noir is up
Yes. It’s been a good week for the PS3 in these head-to-heads at last.

Quit being a bitch. You make gamers look like douchbags. Go away and play your precious Xbox. And please stay off live. I’m sure you’re one of those abmoxious bitches whining while I’m trying to enjoy my game.
The Cyris 2 face-off was not a tie.
“There’s little doubt that the Xbox 360 is the cleaner, crisper experience and for the most part it commands a small but significant frame-rate advantage and fewer little glitches; especially outside of combat scenarios, the game just seems to run that much more smoothly.”
“On balance, 360 has the edge in terms of visuals and general performance, but PS3 more than holds its own, bettering the Microsoft platform in some areas.”
It’s pretty clear which one Leadbetter favoured from those quotes. The game is a considerably lower resolution on PS3 and the image is stretched horizontally, yet it still has a lower overall framerate and is more glitchy. Sorry, but that is not a tie.
It seems to me that he winds up by saying that the 360 has the edge but the PS3 also has the edge! I look forward the Lens of Truth article.
Hey why did u give crysis to x-box360 when DF said that in non action scenes x-box is better but heavy action scenes its the ps3 and ps3 has better 3d support. shouldn’t that be considered a tie when he didn’t give a clear winner? He didn’t say what version to go for.
He did say. “On balance, 360 has the edge… but the PS3 more than holds its own.” Still, re-reading that sentence, I agree that I had subconsciously given more weight to the phrase “has the edge” than I should have. I will adjust my result to a tie.
Just wondering. Why has the Homefront comparison win been given to the 360? LOT gave it to the PS3. I agree with them.
You listen to Lens of Truth over Digital Foundry, in which DF is more trustworthy in multiplat comparisons? Why?
I prefer their comparisons. I think they do a better job. I don’t get why they show both LOT and DF comparisons on here if they’re not going to take into consideration what LOT says.
I usually agree with their results. I agree with LOT, that Homefront looks better on PS3. The facial details are much better.
The winner is always taken from Eurogamer… who said the PC was the best. You can, since 2011 updates, hover over the publication icons to get an instant note on what they chose and why.
Ok. I don’t understand why you show LOT comparisons then?
Hard to tell, especially now when kinect and move are on scene. Ps3 is not giving up ;) we will see
Shouldn’t Dragon Age II be down as a tie? This is what Eurogamer said: –
“In terms of which console version to buy, there’s no clear winner here – they’re both good games, but each has its strengths and weaknesses. BioWare has done a good job in providing what is for the most part a like-for-like experience, and the choice between them boils down to whether you prefer v-sync and a lower frame-rate in taxing situations on 360, or smoother performance and screen-tear on PS3. There’s very little in it, but in this case, I’d go for the latter.”
The last line seems to be his personal preference, rather than him giving advice.
It still tips in in favour of the PS3. Additionally, this article also declares the PS3 version as favoured: “actually the PS3 version was ever so slightly preferred.”
Any info on the upcoming Mortal Kombat game? I own both systems and dont know which system to buy it for. It seems the PS3 are getting more exclusives and extra content from launch then the xbox version…is that because the PS3 cannot compete? Anyone know which system the game is being developed on? thanks in advance
Nothing about Mortal Kombat known as yet.
Dude, really enjoy checking out the head2head results, you provide a great service to all gamers who have more then one console. As a real gamer (not a fanboy) I like to believe that when buying a multiplatfrom game I made the correct choice.
I’m curious why you chose Dead Space X360 version as the better version when DF and LOT said graphically there was no difference between them, plus PS3 version is on one disc and has DS Extraction as a bonus.
Thanks for all your effort.
Oops. I meant to list Dead Space 2 as PS3. Updated now.
Are you serious? You shouldn’t determine which version is better because of 1 disc & some extras which weren’t all that great to begin with. If anything, it should really be at a tie.
Sorry, I thought that you were talking about Mass Effect 2. Never mind.

Sorry, but I think this article is too much biased on the consoles, rather than PC. Take for example Half-Life 2 and Orange Box. They all got 360 rating, when for PC is actually much better, it can run on nearly all low/mid-range computers and it has mod support.
@Englebert:
Did you read this here? At the very top of the page & after where it says “Full List?”
If the PC version was superior to the winning console version it is marked with this icon. Generally, the PC wins out but frequently requires a suspiciously beefy machine.
The windows mark would be marked right next to the rating of those games. This article is mainly between the 360 & the PS3, in which most people game on those consoles.
This list is based on comparison articles that are generally done between 360 and PS3 only. Lens of Truth only compare the consoles, Digital Foundry include PC on a seemingly random basis while IGN used to generally include all three. Also, the PC version is frequently released later and the original article, despite promises to the contrary, is rarely, if ever, updated or supplemented.
Hi, Mister Slimm. Get a load of this comment posted by the user named “Umbriel”, especially in bold:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-enslaved-faceoff/comments?comment_start=50
“The whole paragraph:
“In terms of the console versions, it’s obvious that there’s no clear, outright winner here as each release has its own strengths and weaknesses. With raw captures run direct through our analysis tools, there’s little doubt that the PS3 version offers a marginally higher performance level and fewer torn frames – but the actual benefit of that in-game isn’t so readily apparent. Its support for 7.1 and DTS audio is also welcome compared to the hardware limited Dolby Digital 5.1 on 360. On the flipside, the QAA blur on PS3 is an integral component of F1’s look and definitely a weakness up against the pristine appearance of the 4x MSAA on 360.
However, for many the graphical advantage won’t matter much. More practical to hardcore enthusiasts is the support for steering wheel peripherals, and here the PS3 commands a clear advantage with some of the best racing hardware supported.”
“That’s the whole summary of F1 2010 face off. Its clear that says that xbox360 has a slight advantage in gfx quality against a slight ps3 perfomance advantage that would be a tie maybe … but xbox360 has less hardware supported and worse sound quality. So the better version is PS3 one, you can like it or no. (That link you provided it isn’t part of Eurogamer, it cant speak for EG, and if the whole results are like F1 2010 … useless).”
Sounds like someone can’t take the heat. Like I said on there, If the PS3 version of this face-off were to honestly win due to framerates, & so-called better sound, etc., then why didn’t the PS3 version completely win, huh? Why wasn’t it given the “PS3 better” mark? Why didn’t Richard himself flat out say “The PS3 version is much more superior” if that were the case? Not to mention that sound doesn’t mean very much unless you have great, expensive speakers when trying to hear it better on a HDTV.
I think that he’s just a plain butthurt PS3 fanboy that can’t handle the truth. Not to mention that he hides behind the PC when responding to another poster & said that the 360 impresses him less. LOL.
Why is Dead to Rights: Retribution given a 360 mark when the Lens of Truth comparison gives the PS3 version the edge and the Digital Foundry comparison is inconclusive?
More likely because Digital Foundry is more trustworthy & reliable than Lens Of Truth is. LOT even gave the PS3 version of Batman: AA the win (basically because of extra content), & also ignoring that the 360 version had AA in which it looks slightly better.
Or maybe that Dead To Rights: Retribution should’ve been at a tie; sorry about that.
The highlighted winner is not a combination. It is always taken from Digital Foundry where available and the DF comments highlight a lower resolution and some lower resolution textures so I gave the nod to 360. The text states that the differences are “minor” but they are still differences. The link to the article is always provided so you can, as you have done, always go and check the source.
If this is a PS3 vs. Xbox 360 comparison blog the winner should be taken from Lens of Truth. Digital Foundry may speak techno babble better but he misses all kinds of details that LOT pick up on. He is a geek, not a gamer. “filtering on the 360 looks to be done using a double penumbra, while PCF (percentage closer filtering) is present on the PS3.” WTF is he talking about, just tell me which one is better in English please.
Also the PC versions which will obviously always be better. This makes NO difference to the people looking for a PS3 vs. Xbox 360 comparison.
Anyway, great blog!
I need just a little clarification. Lens of Truth rated the PS3 version of Batman: Arkham Asylum as superior to the Xbox 360. Above you list LOT as rating the Xbox 360 version as the better version. Is this based on LOT’s final rating or on the comments regarding the graphics? It would not seem to matter since LOT says the PS3 has superior graphics, but I wanted to know if this is merely an oversight or if you use some other barometer to determine what version is superior?
The winner on the list is always taken from Eurogamer, if available. The IGN and Lens of Truth totals are accurate and this is why the totals are listed separately at the top of the page as they sometimes come to different conclusions.
The 360 is certainly the better all round console but the PS3 does have the occasional stand out title. I will soon have both Machines but if I had to choose one or the other -360 by a huge margin. I pity you PS3 owners and your version of Bayonetta.
Yes, here he is with another article from the ever so credible IGN that has absolutely nothing to do with cross-platform game development, which is the sole focus of this blog. Of the 7 most recent games added to the list, 4 are better on the 360 and the other 3 are equal on both platforms, but let’s not concern ourselves with that. Let’s just link to any article that praises the PS3 as that will help quash any cognitive dissonance and buyer’s remorse.
Just don’t pay any mind to Titanius here, because he’s just thick headed. Both 360 & PS3 are very equal to one another in specs, & the 360 is very capable of matching the PS3 in the graphics category. Plus no one cares whatever a PC version of a certain game looks better than 360 versions; we’re talking about PS3 & 360. And IGN as a credible source? LOL!
Plus the reason WHY PS3’s exclusives look better than 360’s exclusives is because Sony pushes their developers to make their games look awesome, while MS doesn’t do that at all for their developers (they’re just being lazy).
In related news, here’s an awesome article on the PS3’s amazing revival and the subsequent golden age that follows: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/106/1067256p1.html
Looks like the one-man Sony Defence Force has arrived in the name of Titanius. The results posted on this blog speak for themselves. As the vast majority of games are multi-platform, they’re at their best on the Xbox 360.
Something the tests that Eurogamer, Lens of Truth and IGN don’t take into account either is online performance, where the PS3 is still lacking basic features like cross-game chat. The 360 also gives you custom soundtrack support in every single game. My PS3 can stay as an exclusive only box, because that’s the only thing it’s good for in terms of gaming.
Like anyone cares about most of these games on the 360; they look much better on PCs anyway. I play most of these on my i7 and they look a whole lot better, thank you very much, so I really don’t give a damn. Given that the 360 had a year-long headstart, the PS3 has done an admirably good job with its exclusives, which are without doubt the best on the market. Let’s not kid ourselves with pointless back-and-forths when the obvious is the obvious, children.
On a related note, I’d like to link an excellent and very well-written article by IGN editor Ryan Geddes about why he, previously a hardcore Xbox 360 gamer, has chosen the PlayStation 3 instead:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/105/1059102p1.html
The last page of the article is particularly an eye-opener, especially for any open-minded individual who isn’t biased and who can appreciate true quality. Great read!
Hah!
Yes using someone’s opinion which is pretty obviously one that’s been derived from years of worshipping japanese console tech as some form of epiphany is a truly truly reaching. That article doesn’t have anything real about why the guy chose to buy a ps3 and start using it, only that he wanted one.
Reason he wants one? It’s japanese, ergo he thinks it’s ‘cool’. Yeah, really stand-up reason for choosing to spend hundreds of dollars…
/feeding.
See there, Titanius? There you go again. You didn’t even bother to read my paragraph about lossless audio, etc. It doesn’t even make a real difference unless you own a good home theater or if you own yourself a really good HDTV. Plus keep thinking that the PS3 is more powerful than the 360. Again, it’s all due to the DEVELOPER’S TALENTS in order to make the game look spectacular.
Plus not everyone has the money to own a PC, or to keep upgrading it over time. You don’t have to own a PC to prove that you’re a gamer.
You just need to shut the hell up & get lost. If anyone’s the elaborate troll, it’s YOU.
@Garland
Oh wow Garly, it seems like you’re actually serious about all this – “OWN a great HDTV or home theater or great PC”? Personally, I think having the best possible configuration is the only way to tell true quality apart from… the rest, but hey, how would you know right, you’re a 360 user.
Oh, and Garlan-lol sorry, but I’m still laughing over your hilarious comments on lossless – but have you even heard lossless audio, ever? If you like, I can suggest a nice ENT pediatrician that’ll help you clear out all that earwax/beeswax you have going around — it’s not gonna come cheap and she kinda bites (ehehe), but hey, it might save your life! I could do a good deed for the day & feel like I finally earned a go at UC2 :)
Oh, boy, someone help me explain to this person here about lossless audio, etc.!
Plus I own BOTH a 360 & a PS3. I’m just fed up with people saying “LOL, 360 sucks!,” “360’s inferior,” etc. That just makes me hate PS3 fanboys mostly.
@Garland
I don’t think you’ve ever listened to true lossless audio if you can’t even discern it or if you supposedly think a “good home theater” is needed to do so. All my music is in lossless (FLAC, WAV, MA) so I know full well of its great benefits – it is MILES better than any lossy audio (no matter its compression), even on poor-frequency headphones and 10-year old speaker systems, mate. I don’t need a super sound system to appreciate the great quality of lossless audio and Bluray movies. If you want some good lossless sources, I would greatly recommend LosslessOne (LonE) for game & anime soundtracks – their WV releases are of top quality.
PS. WV: WavPack for the uninformed
Also, FFXIII won’t even be released on the 360 in its original home in Japan or major regions like Asia. Read: Final Fantasy XIII on the PlayStation 3 will feature superior lossless audio and higher quality 1080p cutscenes, something which won’t be present in the Xbox 360 version, which will be compressed on multiple DVDs, requiring mid-game disc switching. As I mentioned, Eurogamer agrees as well in their recent head-to-head article.
You see, Titanius, I’m not mentally deficient, because there are people like yourself out there who think that the 360 is very inferior to the PS3 when it really acts the same as the PS3.
Plus as for their exclusives, you can give someone the same development time & money & those graphics will come out to look EXACTLY the same as the PS3 version. Plus their exclusives can automatically look better on PC as well. And not everyone owns a good gaming PC. Plus games like Crysis easily wipes out their exclusives any day of the week.
Plus people like you honestly think that compression for FFXIII is automatically awful when it really isn’t, as there’s absolutely no difference unless you own yourself a really, nice big audio theater or something. Microsoft has good compression techniques when it comes to that. So don’t go acting like “LOL, the 360 version has lossless audio & compression, therefore, the PS3’s automatically better!” It’s only MARGINALLY better, not like Bayonetta better.
Plus all Blu-Ray does is give you more space, NOT more quality in graphics. Just because it works for movies, DOESN’T mean that it’ll work the same way in games.
You just proved during your entire paragraph that you’re a PS3 fanboy. But what can I expect?
@Garland
I believe you’ve just exposed your mass lack of intelligence by claiming that lossy audio and video somehow supersedes or equals lossless audio and video – any one with a fuctiona ear that isn’t filled to the brim with earwax would believe a foolish and inane statement. Your other claims about the 360, a console that is riddled with deficiencies, are completely laughable as well – stop saying “if this happened” (a little subjective, eh) and talk about the stuff that’s already out there for the world to see: the PS3 has the very best-looking console games out there. Oh, and yeah, if you’re a gamer, you’re SUPPOSED to own a “good gaming PC” – are you living in denial or is this just an elaborate troll lol? nVidia’s and ATI’s latest graphics cards are like what a million times better than anything on the 360 – so yeah, guess what, I don’t think I’m gonna lose much sleep over a 360.
Actually, I think I’ll chow it down with some Uncharted 2, MGS & Heavy Rain! And oh, there’s TLG & GT5 too! Oh my, am I in such a dilemma, what is I to do?!
@Garland
You must be seriously mentally deficient, because the best PS3 games (read: exclusive) look infinitely better than the best 360 ones – and most of the games that look good on the 360 you can get them at much better quality for the PC! There’s no comparison when you compare the massive capacity of Bluray to the poor third-rate limited capacity of the ancient DVD. Eurogamer has already reported that the 360 version of FFXII will suck bigtime, as they cannot fit in the movies & cut scenes into a DVD so the PS3 version would most certainly be superior. It’s biased [people] like you that make me feel sorry for 360 gamers.
I agree. I have been back and forth with 360 vs. PS3 for 2 years now. Having traded back and forth, I currently own both.
Bayonetta proved it once and for all. The GPU’s on the 360 performs MUCH better. It wasn’t laziness on 3rd parties. It is the FACT that the PS3 is inferior due to only having ONE GPU and making THREE DSP’s compensate for the lack thereof. I was fooled by Sony’s machine, thinking because it came out a year later it was going to be more powerful. We were all fooled. We could go on and on, but as of 2010, those 6 points Garland made are Historical FACTS (including with PS3 exclusives).
Also, you call 3rd developers lazy because they won’t spend any time trying to make PS3 versions of games look on par with 360 versions or better than 360 versions? Come on. Even when a game is being developed first for PS3, or if a game was ported from PS3 to 360, they’ll STILL come out running & looking better on the 360. Look at games like Virtua Fighter 5 & Assassin’s Creed. Developing games for PS3 first would take a lot of time, & money. Just like what Namco-Bandai did with Tekken 6, in which they started developing for the PS3 for about 2-3 years. And guess what? When it was announced that it was coming to the 360 in October last year, the graphics came out running & looking the exact same on the 360 in less development time & money. The same thing that’s going on with Square-Enix on Final Fantasy XIII. So, it was all just wasted effort. You have to understand that.
And it is more than just resolutions & graphics. Most PS3 versions of games happens to suffer from one or more of these things below:
1.) Games running in 30 Hz instead of at 60.
2.) Laggy Online.
3.) Framerate drops.
4.) Screen Tearing.
5.) Awful lighting, shadowing, & texturing.
6.) Tons of jaggies.
You get the point.
Mark, the thing is that 3rd party developers shouldn’t have to keep wasting their time, money, & resources just to make PS3 versions of games on par with the 360 versions (or even better than the 360 versions, for that matter). Especially when the PS3 is STILL being stuck in 3rd place, development costs keep rising, & that most PS3 versions of games really don’t sell very well compared to 360 versions. Do you honestly think that they have the kind of money to waste just trying to make PS3 versions look on par with 360 or even better? That’s why you see most games being multiplatform.
Even when PS3 reaches it’s full potential, & by the time that happens, both Nintendo & Microsoft would be out with their next gen consoles that would make those PS3 graphics look very dated. Guaranteed.
Sony made their console hard for developers to develop on for PS2 as hard enough as it is, but then they intentionally made it worse for PS3. Maybe they should learn their lesson not to make their console so damn hard to develop games on. That’s why so many 3rd party developers hated developing games on that machine. Plus a more better GPU & more RAM would be a big help.
The 360 can’t compete as PS3 devs get more efficient at offloading to the Cell. You don’t have the hardware to match the results obtained. You can stomp your feet all you want at eurogamer & beyond 3D about KZ2 saying you’re not “fooled” by post-processing (apparently the industry was fooled hence the across the board tech praise and 91 meta) and its clearly not the console industry’s best as if GG is performing some taboo trick that other developers avoid….
I’d also like to know which of these garbage console games you think is the industry’s best by the way fanboys so I can laugh at games like RE5 and their claims of 3-4 million a frame. Pure BS. Let me tell you something it certainly doesn’t look like a 3 million a frame console game.
These same idiots who claim to know the 360 & PS3 hardware instead of probably just the former call ND’s Uncharted series “tweaked” for the platform…understand you will never produce a more complex scene. Let me reiterate you will never render a more complex scene. You might get as pretty one day, but I doubt that as you don’t have the talent first and foremost. That writing has been on the wall the past 2 years. I laughed when I read on Eurogamer that Bungie doesn’t have the time to best KZ2 and if they did they could. Try Bungie by all means try. I’m sure you lurk on forums like Turn 10. Hopefully this third outing doesn’t have a sub-HD framebuffer noobs.
No true at all.Poor framerate , screen tearing , A-A and poor textures are major problems on games and 8/10 times ps3 is worse in that regard.Just because a console has blu-ray and a more powerful/expensive processor doesn’t mean there better .Its a common mistake made by misinformed people who don’t want to feel cheated because they payed a lot more for a ps3 and are loyal to Sony .Read through all the comparisons[and pay close attention to the screen comparisons] by digital foundry who have no allegiance to either manufacturer and see for yourself.Overall PC is generally better than both consoles but a lot more expensive to configure with the latest games .You seem clueless & misinformed ,read the facts posted by the professionals and quit talking nonsense or provide proof to back your comments up like digital foundry actually do with extensive testing .
Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, GT5 are all heads and shoulders better than anything on the 360 yet cheapskate developers are still developing games on the the 360 for 18-24 months and then quickly porting to the PS3 in 1-3 months. Some big multiplatform game companies have only hired 1 PS3 programmer!
No wonder so many of the PS3 multiplatform titles are so crappy. Consumers need to vote with their wallets. Stop buying games from developers who are assuming you’ll buy the game even if they didn’t put any genuine effort into make it the best it could be on your PS3.
And you know which system STILL leads in sales today? the underpowered & unimpressive Nintendo Wii. It just goes to show that not everyone is a pixel wh*re. Some of us like quality, relaxing games that don’t take 16 buttons on the controller!
That’s because a Wii isn’t a true console. It’s not a gaming machine, it’s a device design for the social environment. No true gamer has just a wii, they have a 360 or PS3 and also a wii. A lot of gamers do have just a 360 or PS3 though. The market for a Wii includes families and children, so it should generate far more sales than consoles. A Wii is like the modern day equivalent of throwing a ball in the backyard. Minimal skill or ability required.
Unreal Tournament 3 is bad linked and certainly looking and reading Eurogamer is NOT a PS3 win!
As on B3D sumarised one user PS3 version:
“On top of that, more noticeable LODs (ie. shorter appearing distance of foilage), less effects (like snowing is completely absent in some of the levels on PS3), less stable framerate (when things get chaotic)”
No motion blur, simpler geometry etc.
That two pictures (from EG) in this post should show you clearly what the problem is:

There is also japanese compare site:
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/yoda-dip-jp/archive?word=*%5BGame%20Compare%5D
And one example – also badly tied win to PS3:
3 gif’s made from that site:
Quincux + missing ligtning on PS3…
Certainly NOT a win!
i had 360 traded it for a ps3 and there is a ton more to do on ps3 i mean gaming is slightly better on 360 but that is why they call a ps3 the ps3 entertainment system not gaming system like internet bluray and lots more
I own both ps3 and an xbox and I honestly like the xbox better and will always buy a game for the 360 over ps3 if given the chance. Xbox has the better online service, which is what adds most to replay value, which is what makes me want to own a game as opposed to just renting it from gamefly. Glad to see they gave Microsoft the W.
The irony of this is that in the last generation sony had the weaker hardware but more software whereas Microsoft had more power in the xbox, but fewer games, and Sony won the console war for that generation. Now it’s the exact opposite. Sony has the more powerful system, but Microsoft’s system has the more popular games.
PS3 still have the best looking games on the market:
GT5Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, etc…
I’d rather have the BEST of the BEST, than have the best of the average.
No surprise for me :(
Hey, just so you know, I randomly come by here from time to time to check for updates. Love this list you provide – please keep it for posterity! Very useful.
There is one small error I’ve noticed; Burnout Paradise should be a tie, not a PS3 win. They say to buy it for the platform on which you have more online friends.
Thanks again!
I’ve played both and the PS3 definitely feels better so I awarded the win!
i forgot SSX 3 xbox game also works on the 360.
the xbox regular game star wars battlefront 2 works on xbox 360 so dont sell it if u have it.
This isn’t the backward compatibility list.
im not sure but if when it shows 360 and ps3 on the same bar if that means both have that game the i just want to say skate 1+2 is on both.
This is a comparison between 360 and PS3 versions. If it shows both, then both versions are technically comparable.
I would have to agree with most of your list, but there’s one that I got to say you are completly wrong. Rainbow 6 Vegas(1st one). This is not a tie, the ps3 version looks like crap compared to the 360 version.

I haven’t played, let alone compared, but at least from this comparison shot the 360 version looks worse.
If you did a comparison in person, maybe you didn’t have the PS3 set to 720p — the 1080i/1080p upscaling is supposed to look terrible. If you saw a comparison gallery other than what DF has, then perhaps they also neglected to set it to 720p.
