Every so often, Digital Foundry (for Eurogamer) run a series of technical comparison reviews for games released on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This is a compilation of their findings into a list.

Now it should be noted that Eurogamer doesn’t always definitively say which version is better. Therefore, bear in mind that this is my understanding of the articles made on the Digital Foundry blog and that you can always read the article yourself by clicking on the Eurogamer icon.

Xbox One versus PS4 Summary

Looks like it’s going to be a sweet revenge victory for PS4.

PS4 is better than Xbox One Eurogamer: the PS4 game clearly leads the way with its native 1080p presentation and solid level of performance during gameplay - outside of the slight judder in story cut-scenes we're looking at a locked 30 and 60fps throughout.Gaming Bolt: The PS4 version is arguably the best experience since its 60 FPS frame rate sees the least amount of frame drops and its native 1080p resolution looks great. However, there are various issues that still need to be resolved across the board including the frame judders and pacing problems. Mortal Kombat X

  1. Just wanted to say I own both the PS4, XB1, and Wii U, and I use your site religiously when I’m trying to decide which console version to buy for any given game. Keep up the great work!

    1. I called it a PS4 win because it operates at higher resolution (1080p) and has better texture filtering. Xbox One had a slightly more stable frame rate but I felt the image quality was a bigger gain in a game like Dragon Age: Inquisition.

  2. Destiny runs with a constant frame-pacing issue on Xbox One, the game is stuttering regularly because of that:

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-destiny-face-off
“Xbox One’s frame-pacing issue is a minor annoyance…the only drawback on Xbox One being its uneven spread of frames at certain points, causing a stutter sensation.”

It should be an easy win for PS4 and even if DF strangely minimized it, it can be a problem for many people. Technically, the PS4 version is performing better, it’s better period. Even DF acknowledged it, through gritted teeth:

“For those lucky enough to own both consoles though, the advantage lies on Sony’s platform – but only by a whisker”

  3. Im also a pc gamer and i say you should only include PS4 VS XBONE in this as thats what everyone is really interested with these comparisons, no pc or WIIU should be in this.

1 it says PC has 13 wins on top but thats counting the ties so it makes no sense.

2 and the biggest problem is that your showing pc wins this and that but then my neighbour comes to me and says “it says BF4 on pc is better than PS4 and XBONE on the site but when i played the game i had to play at lowest settings at 720P with barely 30fps”. What this means is that it says pc wins but depends on the pc you have and because theres a million combinations of pcs many people will have different experiences and most of them are worse, really aside from me i don’t think i know anyone who has a massive pc.

I know you take this from digital foundry but still you could add only the results from PS4 vs XBONE as it will make it much cleaner and less confusing.

      1. Exactly, all the people i know that call themselves pc gamers are playing on laptops or have pcs that are 5+ years old, they are playing these new games low-medium at 720P, thats much worse than the PS4 or XBONE. Still, if most of these people go read digital foundry or see these results, they actually believe they will play the game like that simply because they have a pc.

So will you change it and have only PS4 vs Xbone and make it cleaner? Im not sure about Wii-U since its weaker and could make it unfair, but still its from the same generation and still has some games like rayman legends.

    1. Ok… so PC should be left out?
That’s not how it works. Its like me having a 100m race against a bunch of olympic runners and the winner is crowned world champion – only all the olympic runners have to sit the race out because it would make it ‘cleaner and less confusing’.

You are just saying that 1 system should be left out because it will win, so that second place appears to be first place.

If you looked at the real results you would see the ps4 and xbox one don;t win very much at all.

      1. This list is just PS4 versus Xbox One. The winner is simply the PS4 vs XB1 Champion.

I say it’s more like a popular public marathon where there are 40,000 runners. There’s one runner for each console and the other nearly 40,000 are PC’s. Some of the PC’s are amazing gaming PC’s, Elite in marathon parlance, and are in contention to be first across the line. Some of the PC’s are 5-year-old Netbooks that stutteringly arrive eight hours later.

This list shows which of just two runners, PS4 and Xbox One, will finish in front of the other.

      2. A good enough point I guess but I prefer to see things in terms of where can I get the best possible experience with any particular game, I don’t like the idea of excluding one platform on the grounds that it was going to win anyway.
Anyhow, given that the PS4 has the more powerful hardware I still don’t see the point of the comparison.
It’s still always going to end up the same winner unless something goes wrong (and if we are sticking to the runners analogy, its pretty much a photo finish each race, a win that only becomes apparent on close scrutiny)

    1. Also I found a bug in the tooltip. For NFS Rivals it says that both versions are equal.

Possible quote for PS4: “Overall, PlayStation 4 takes the lead where the next-gen consoles are concerned, with the higher quality effects work and higher frame-rates providing a preferable experience overall, particularly during heated combat, where the drops in performance are both felt and seen more heavily on the Xbox One.”

Possible quote for the PC version: “Running with the ultimate preset enabled and the original TressFX in action, it’s clear that the Definitive Edition delivers an upgrade in select areas, but fails to trump the PC game in all respects. Certainly, when it comes to running at 1080p60 – or with even higher resolutions and frame-rate – no other platform can truly offer a PC-beating experience.”
